Cycling Around Mt. Fuji|A Local E-Bike Tour in Fuji City (Shizuoka Prefecture)

🗻 Cycling around Mt. Fuji is one of the most iconic outdoor experiences in Japan—but most guides only focus on the busy Fuji Five Lakes area.

✅ This article introduces a different way to experience the landscapes around Mt. Fuji: a guided e-bike tour through Fuji City in Shizuoka Prefecture, where quiet countryside, pure spring water, and local life unfold at the base of Japan’s tallest peak.

😄 Hi, I’m Takeru — a Shizuoka-based travel blogger who writes about onsen stays, local culture, and realistic Mt. Fuji viewpoints you can easily add to your trip. 👍
I also share practical tips for family travelers when helpful.

I joined this “Mount Fuji Scenic E-Bike Tour” myself, led by a local guide who knows the area inside out and communicates comfortably in English.

The experience was completely unlike the typical sightseeing routes. With relaxed crowds and easy-to-ride e-bikes, it felt like discovering Mt. Fuji’s hidden side—authentic, peaceful, and full of small surprises you won’t find in the guidebooks.

💡 If you’d like to check the details, you can also view the tour on “Viator” — in addition to the overview I share in this article:

Why This Mt. Fuji Cycling Experience Is So Unique

Many travelers search for “Cycling around Mt. Fuji” and end up in the crowded Fuji Five Lakes area.
But this tour offers something completely different—a slow, local journey guided by someone who truly knows the region.

1. A Local Guide Who Knows the Area Deeply (and Speaks English)

🚴‍♂️ Unlike typical rental-bike routes, this experience is led by a guide who grew up in the region and understands its history, culture, and hidden viewpoints.

2. A Relaxed Route Away from Tourist Crowds

🗻 Fuji City is not a major sightseeing hub, which means the roads are quieter, the scenery feels more authentic, and there’s no need to compete for photo spots.

It’s a rare chance to enjoy Mt. Fuji at your own pace—without the noise and congestion of Fuji Five Lakes.

3. Electric-Assisted Bicycles That Make the Ride Comfortable

🚲 These are electric-assisted bicycles that give you a gentle boost when pedaling.

This extra support makes the route more comfortable, especially on small hills, so even casual riders can enjoy the scenery without worrying about physical strain.

4. Glimpses of Everyday Life at the Base of Mt. Fuji

⛩️ The route passes through peaceful neighborhoods, spring-water spots, shrines, and tea shops where locals go in their daily lives.

It’s a side of Mt. Fuji that most first-time visitors never get to see.

5. Easy to Add to a One-Day Itinerary even from Tokyo

🚅 Because the meeting point is right in front of Shin-Fuji Station, a Shinkansen (bullet train) stop, you can join the tour easily without a car.

Shin-Fuji Station is only about an hour from Tokyo on the Shinkansen, which makes this tour easy to fit into a one-day plan—even without a car.

Tour Overview – Mount Fuji Scenic E-Bike Tour

This guided tour runs twice a day and lasts about 2.5 hours.
The schedule, route, and pace can be adjusted based on the group, making it a flexible and beginner-friendly experience.

🕘 Start times: 9:30 AM or 1:15 PM

⏳ Duration: approx. 2.5 hours
*The guide flexibly adjusts the route depending on the participants’ interests and comfort level.

💡 Recommended:
If you have the option, the morning tour is generally the better choice—temperatures are cooler, the sky tends to be clearer, and the chances of seeing a beautiful Mt. Fuji are slightly higher.

📍 Meeting Points

The main meeting point for the tour is JR Shin-Fuji Station (South Exit), a Shinkansen bullet train stop with easy access from cities like Tokyo and Nagoya.

If you’re arriving via the local train network—such as from Shimizu Port or other nearby areas—you can also join the tour from JR Fuji Station, which is often more convenient for those not using the Shinkansen.

⚠️ Please note that the meeting time at JR Fuji Station may be earlier when joining the group departing from Shin-Fuji Station.

🚃 Although the name is similar, JR Fuji Station and Shin-Fuji Station are a few kilometers apart, so be sure to check which station you’ll be arriving at beforehand.

🚲 Preparing for the Ride

The tour is operated as the “NINOMARU Guided Cycling Tour”, and your guide prepares e-assist bicycles in advance so everything is ready when you arrive.

Before setting off, the guide gives simple instructions on how to use the electric-assist bicycle.
These bikes provide gentle pedal support—not full electric motorcycles—making small hills easier and the overall ride more comfortable.

🧳 For travelers carrying large suitcases, baggage can be stored at the station’s tourist information center or in coin lockers (about 500 yen per day).

🗻 What the Ride Feels Like

The route takes you through quiet local streets and countryside paths with minimal traffic and only gentle ups and downs.

It’s comfortable for casual riders or those not used to cycling, and the relaxed pace leaves plenty of time to enjoy the views and ask questions along the way.

🏥 Insurance Coverage Included:
Insurance coverage for accidents during the cycling tour is included in the tour price.
After booking, you’ll simply be asked to share a few details by email to activate the coverage.

📸 I’ll share more about the specific Mt. Fuji photo spots and local highlights in the next section.

Highlights of the Route

🗻 This cycling route covers a mix of cultural landmarks, local scenery, and hidden photo spots that most visitors never encounter.
Below are the key places we stopped at during the tour—each offering a different perspective on life at the foot of Mt. Fuji.

ℹ️ Please note that the actual stops may vary depending on the day’s conditions and the flow of the tour.

⚓️ Mt. Fuji and Port View Park — Mt. Fuji and the Harbor in One Frame

This quiet local viewpoint offers a rare angle where Mt. Fuji and the port area can be captured together.

It’s a peaceful spot that reflects the everyday rhythm of Fuji City, far from the busy tourist lookouts.

I loved how quiet it was—you can feel the sea breeze while looking out over the Pacific. Not only the viewpoint itself, but the coastal ride leading up to it felt incredibly refreshing.

📸 Fujisan Yume-no-Ohashi Bridge — A Wide, Open View of the Mountain

This long pedestrian bridge provides a broad, unobstructed view of Mt. Fuji—one of the clearest vantage points along the route.

🔽 Below is an embedded Instagram post showcasing a beautiful photo of this location.

As you ride across, the scenery opens dramatically, giving you a powerful sense of how closely Fuji City is connected to the mountain.

It’s interesting to see how popular this spot has become on Instagram, especially since it has always felt like a normal part of the neighborhood to me.

⛩️ Suzukawa Fujizuka  — A Historic Mt. Fuji Pilgrimage Mound

This small “Fujizuka” mound once served as a symbolic starting point for Mt. Fuji pilgrimages.

The silhouette of Mt. Fuji perfectly aligned with the Fujizuka mound.

The shrine’s peaceful atmosphere, paired with the guide’s explanation of Fuji worship, offers a glimpse into the spiritual history of the region.

It’s the kind of place you’d never visit on your own, but it has a quiet, sacred feel once you’re there. This was originally a starting point for climbing Mt. Fuji, where people would stack small stones to pray for a safe ascent—something you wouldn’t know without a local guide.

🚅 Mt. Fuji × Shinkansen — A Hidden Photo Spot You Won’t Find in Guidebooks

One of the most exciting stops is a completely local, unmarked viewpoint where you can photograph Mt. Fuji with the Shinkansen passing right in front.

Bullet Trains come every few minutes, making it surprisingly easy to capture the perfect shot—even though almost no tourists know this location exists.

It’s usually so quiet here that you won’t see tourists—or even many locals—walking around.
But it’s worth stopping for a moment and waiting until a Shinkansen passes, all while taking in the beautiful view of Mt. Fuji.

🍵 Yamadaien Tea Shop — Learn the Depth of Japanese Tea Culture

This long-established tea shop introduces visitors to the culture, history, and brewing techniques of Japanese tea.

You’ll learn how subtle changes in water temperature affect flavor, enjoy a relaxing break, and experience tea prepared by someone who truly understands its depth.

This shop has been part of the community for more than 130 years, and you can really feel that local warmth when you sit down with a cup of freshly brewed green tea.
They share all kinds of interesting stories and tips about Japanese tea, and the guide helps interpret everything so you won’t miss a detail.

⛩️ Fuji Rokusho Sengen Shrine — Understanding the Network of Sengen Shrines

This shrine helps you understand the relationship among the many Sengen shrines linked to Mt. Fuji worship.

Most Sengen shrines enshrine Konohanano-sakuya-hime, the goddess associated with Mt. Fuji, but this shrine is a little different.
Fuji Rokusho Sengen Shrine honors her father as its main deity, which gives it a unique place within the network of Fuji-related shrines.
