🍜 Planning a visit to Shuzenji and wondering where to go for a good lunch?
Whether you’re traveling as a couple, with friends, or with little children, this guide highlights five great lunch spots around Shuzenji Onsen that offer both delicious food and a comfortable atmosphere.

Hi, I’m Takeru—born and raised in the Izu area of Shizuoka Prefecture, and now living nearby with my two young daughters (ages 5 and 2).

While you can search for restaurants using review sites or Google Maps, it’s not always easy to find up-to-date information about lunch hours, weekly closures, or whether a place is suitable for families.
That’s why I’ve put together this curated list based on:
✔️ Comfortable, relaxed seating—such as traditional Japanese-style floor seating with low tables
- ✔️ Delicious, well-prepared meals that showcase local flavors
- ✔️ Open during lunchtime hours
✔️ Kid-friendly menu options or dishes that are easy for children to enjoy
Even if you’re not traveling with kids, you’ll find these restaurants welcoming, reasonably priced, and perfect for a relaxing meal while exploring Shuzenji.

🍲 A Traditional Kamameshi Restaurant Just a Short Drive from the Hot Spring Town
Located about a 5-minute drive from the center of Shuzenji Onsen, Genji Kamameshi Matsuba Chaya is a long-standing favorite for traditional Japanese rice pot dishes.
The restaurant is spacious and features mostly tatami-style seating, making it a comfortable spot for couples, families, and even those with small children.

🍚 Kamameshi is a type of Japanese rice dish cooked and served in a small iron pot (called kama). The rice is typically steamed together with flavorful ingredients like vegetables, meat, or seafood, resulting in a fragrant and slightly crispy bottom layer. It’s considered a special meal often enjoyed on trips or special occasions in Japan.

This restaurant is known for its wide variety of kamameshi options and hand-prepared soba noodles.
Because kamameshi is cooked fresh for each order, it may take around 30 minutes to prepare. Ordering soba or another side dish first is a good idea to start the meal while you wait.
Everything we tried here tasted like a real treat—and yes, even kids loved the kamameshi! For young children, a smaller-sized “One Coin Soba” is also available at a very reasonable price.
For updates on hours and temporary closures, check out the restaurant’s Instagram.
