🗻 Looking for a Japanese-style stay in Shizuoka City?

🏨 This guide hand-picks five highly rated Japanese-style hotels and ryokan in Shizuoka City, each offering authentic tatami (straw-mat) flooring—take off your shoes, relax, and sleep on cozy futon.

😄 Hi, I’m Takeru — a Shizuoka-based travel blogger.
I primarily cover onsen stays and hot-spring culture across Shizuoka Prefecture, followed by can’t-miss Mt. Fuji viewpoints you can realistically fit into your itinerary.
When relevant, I include practical notes for travelers with kids.
All picks meet these strict standards:
✅ High guest ratings (above 8.0 out of 10) on major booking sites.
✅ Convenient locations as a base for Shizuoka City attractions and day trips.
💡 You’ll also find a couple of lesser-known gems that don’t always surface on OTA search pages. If you’re hunting for tatami rooms in Shizuoka, start with the stays below.
- 1 1. Kuretake Inn Premium Shizuoka Annex — Wa-Modern Tatami Twin Near Shizuoka Station
- 2 2. Hotel Celeste Shizuoka — Designer Suite with Tatami & Living Space
- 3 3. Hotel Hagoromo — Classic Ryokan with Mt. Fuji View & World-Renowned Scenery
- 4 4. NIHON IRO — Vacation Rental in Traditional Japanese-Style Houses
- 5 5. Onogiso Ryokan — Hidden Hot Spring Retreat in Umegashima
1. Kuretake Inn Premium Shizuoka Annex — Wa-Modern Tatami Twin Near Shizuoka Station
Around JR Shizuoka Station, hotels with true tatami rooms are rare—even many large city hotels don’t offer them.
🏨 The Kuretake Inn Premium Shizuoka Annex is a valuable exception: just a 10-minute walk from the station, with consistently high reviews and a Japanese-style “Wa-modern Twin” room, and relatively affordable rates.

The Wa-modern Twin gives you the look & feel of tatami while offering Western-style low beds—perfect if you want Japanese design but prefer not to sleep on futon. Since the flooring is tatami, it also feels safer for families: even if a little child rolls off the bed, the soft mat surface cushions the fall.

♨️ On-site highlights include a public bath (separate for men and women), a complimentary breakfast praised for variety, and a happy-hour drink service. For its reasonable rates, this hotel delivers excellent value.

🍲 One of this hotel’s biggest strengths, which I also experienced myself, is the delicious breakfast. The operator, Kuretake Group, has grown into a nationwide hotel chain with a strong focus on food—rooted in its origins in traditional Japanese cuisine.

💴 Rates vary by season, day of the week, and booking plan, but typically start around ¥15,000 per night for two people with breakfast included. Children under school age stay free when sharing a bed, making it very budget-friendly.
The Japanese-style “Wa-modern Twin” room is limited to just 10 rooms, so it’s best to book early if available.

🚃 From JR Shizuoka Station:
It’s roughly a 10-minute walk, but if you’re traveling with little children or carrying heavy luggage, a taxi is more convenient. You’ll find a taxi stand on the west (left) side of the north exit.

2. Hotel Celeste Shizuoka — Designer Suite with Tatami & Living Space
🏨 Another standout option near JR Shizuoka Station is Hotel Celeste Shizuoka, a stylish designer hotel about a 15-minute walk from the station. Located in a quiet neighborhood, it offers the convenience of self check-in and the comfort of a serviced-apartment style stay.

💡 The Celeste Suite spans about 45㎡, with a tatami room plus low beds, a separate living area with sofa, and practical facilities like a washing machine, bathroom dryer, and microwave—ideal for multi-night stays.
Families with kids will also enjoy the comfort of the spacious tatami area, where everyone can take off their shoes, stretch out, and relax directly on the floor.
💴 As an apartment-style property, Hotel Celeste offers accommodation-only stays (no meals included).
The Celeste Suite (≈45㎡) is around ¥30,000 per night (lower in the off-season) and accommodates up to four adults—ideal for families or small groups. With only three suites available, early booking is recommended.

🚶 The hotel is about a 15-minute walk from JR Shizuoka Station, but the route passes through a somewhat narrow residential neighborhood, which can be tricky to navigate if you’re new to the area.
🚕 For a smoother arrival—especially with luggage or kids—taking a taxi from the north exit taxi stand at Shizuoka Station is the most convenient option.
🏯 The hotel is just a 10-minute walk from Sumpu Castle Park, a historic site linked to Tokugawa Ieyasu – one of Japan’s most famous historic leaders during the Edo period (1603–1868) – and a seasonal favorite for cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage. It’s a perfect base for sightseeing in central Shizuoka.
